Mobile Image Processing With the Advent of the iPad

There has been a large number of photography apps developed for the bright new world called the iPhone. Several of note are Camera Bag, Pano, and ColorSplash to name a few. These apps were and are great fun for a phone platform. Then, to everyone’s amazement, the phone cameras got a whole lot better. Adobe jumps in with Photoshop Express; and even pros started to get onboard, such as Chase Jarvis who published an entire book of just iPhone images called “Best Camera”. He even developed an iPhone app with the same name.

Now let’s jump to the present with the iPad. The larger screen has opened the door to a plethora of photo apps that are not only fun but provide professional tools for post production on hi res images, pro contracts and model releases, lighting, and even geo tools for anticipating direction of natural light at any given time of day in any part of the world. With the camera kit , you can upload your pro DSLR images to the iPad, process, watermark, and share via email, facebook, your blog or website without yet even leaving the venue of your shoot. On location you can complete a contract/model release, complete the shoot, upload and post-produce the images, watermark and upload to private gallery, blogs, etc…

Of course iPads are not yet at a point of being a complete solution, but the size and mobility makes it more of an asset then I think most had anticipated! 4-8 GB of RAM, and either a large hard drive or USB connectivity for an external could just do it…maybe those things are coming soon! Currently the statistics show that the iPhone, and others, have killed the point-shoot market! They have literally been rendered obsolete.

Naturally this article could be a lot longer covering more capabilities, more apps, etc. What I might do is mention one app per week or per month, as there are so many worthy of discussion.

Included here is an image I shot with my iPhone on a late-morning run. Upon arriving at home I sent to my iPad, processed, watermarked the photo and shared without ever using my computer.
